Assessment of Radiation Levels and Potential Radiological Hazards in the Soils of Riruwai Mining Area, North-Western Nigeria

This research aimed to assess the levels of natural radionuclides in soil Riruwai mining area and evaluate radiological hazards associated with them. A total sixty samples were collected from four sampling sites during dry wet seasons. The concentrations uranium-238 (238U), thorium-232 (232Th), potassium-40 (40K) measured using an HPGe gamma-ray spectrometer, used estimate internal external gamma dose rate. results analysis indicated that 238U 232Th all seasons higher than world average. radionuclide soils showed a significant seasonal variation, obtained season. correlation revealed very strong positive relationship between radionuclides, which indicates common origin (parent material). rate computations only active abandoned have mean greater tolerable limit 59.00 nGy/h. assessments had potential be hazardous human health. researchers, therefore, recommend comprehensive monitoring operations public education about dangers radiation exposure study carried out.
